#NaPoWriMo2012: Inspiration Found on 8th Ave

2 Apr

Inspired by this pot of flowers blooming bright on 8th Avenue in the middle of the night, I wrote my second poem in the #NaPoWriMo2012: 30-days-for-30-poems challenge!

It’s a little vignette into the night life and inner thoughts an urbanite encounters on the commute home.

{8th Ave}

In a City that Never Sleeps
These Spring Flowers Bloom Day an’ Night
8th Ave Never Smelled Quite as Sweet

I could just kick up my feet
Taking in such a lovely sight
How rude to hear traffic beeps

A child cries an’ a man weeps
Bums beg, trash tumbles, such a blight
Vultures lurk, run quick, don’t get beat

Are there cops? Turn up the heat!
Cat calls, shadows stalk, duck the fight
Walk tall, purse the lips, make big leaps

Where are all the friendly peeps?
Like Naked Cowboy, such the sight
The train home better have a seat

So tired an’ ready to eat
Gee, I wish with all my might
To have spaghetti in huge heaps

This city’s game is for keeps
The tough win an’ the weak take flight
To survive, yes. Thrive tis the real feat

Every challenge you must meet
Or walk the plank to face your plight
To overcome, the reward reaps

In a City that Never Sleeps
These Spring Flowers Bloom Day an’ Night
8th Ave Never Smelled Quite as Sweet
