2010: The last year of the first decade of the 21st century … now, that context absolutely shouts why this year was a milestone.

But for me personally, the milestone of 2010 was in still being alive. It was a year spent recovering from a traumatic brain injury, and finding the way to come back to my life stronger and more vibrant than I was before being hospitalized.

Fashionable for Hilary Swank

From January until May, I felt like I was sleep walking and in many ways I was — teetering on the edge between normal routine and barely functioning. The balance was a precarious mix between physical issues and then the psychological impact of starting the day “fine” and a few short hours later being crippled by pain.

Life for those months was about surviving and finding little pockets of “up-to-par” functioning — which was a tremendous respite.

The summer — June, July and August — was when I started to find my balance on solid ground again. Instead of having a couple good hours or a couple good days, my recovery shifted into having a couple good days followed by a couple good weeks.

Then along came the fall, and its ironic how in a season where things are going into a hibernation state, I began to become more alive — more peace, calm, joy, confidence.

It’s as if I needed to prove to myself, and life needed to prove to me, that all was well again — that I could trust and rely on my body once more, and that I could count on me to be able to navigate the waters, come what may.

Now, my days and weeks have become routine and normalcy seems to have been reached. My life is only marked by a couple hours a week or a couple days a month with issues — and that is a huge step forward. I have no idea if this is as good as my recovery is going to get, or if there is still more recovery to be had, but I am happy to be alive and fully engaged in this game of life.

PS. To be technically correct, the first three posts (Fashionable for Hilary Swank; Last Call … Til Fall; and Daffadown Dilly) were actually worn/shot in Fall 2009 before I was hospitalized. Writing those posts in early 2010 was a matter of picking up where I left off, as well as a practice in learning how to structure sentences, use the right words and string ideas together again. It wasn’t until April/May that I was able to really get dressed and attempt a full day’s schedule.

I love the Mad Men look the best. It’s crazy how this year had so many influences from the past, and I think Mad Men definitely had a hand in the popularity, don’t you? I hope I win! I would love to go shopping with you Robin!
