Goodwill blogs? And, I’m a ‘Style Icon’ — Say What?!?

6 Dec

… Yes, two somewhat surprising phrases my lips have recently uttered. But both are apparently true … the mega-thrift store Goodwill is all over social media, like bargain hunters on Black Friday, and I am a thrifting style icon.

Both these realizations occurred when “A Good Look by GoodwillNyNj” — the blogging entity of the Goodwill stores located in Greater New York and Northern New Jersey — decided I was the obvious choice for their next profiled “Style Icon.” Talk about being completely flattered and humbled by those words: style icon.

But that is what the site does — it highlights people who are putting together amazing looks that most would never think come from “second-hand, thrift shops” and in the process, it helps redefine what is possible to find at thrift stores, breaking the stereotype of merchandise quality and shopping demographics.

In addition to style icons — like myself and Sammy D, another amazing thrifting native Pennsylvanian-turned-Gotham Citizen — the blog is updated daily with all sorts of intriguing shopping tips and style how-to’s. I have been so impressed by their social media savvyness, the journalist in me simply couldn’t resist asking a few questions about how on Earth the incredibly cool, Web 2.0 Goodwill came to be.

Enjoy … and be sure to check out their feature on me, AND, all the other amazing posts!

How did a blog start for Goodwill?
A Good Look by GoodwillNyNj came about because the retail division of Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey was curious about how better to reach our fans. From chatting with our shoppers, we knew our fans were great and we wanted to create a place online where we could interact with them more informally and immediately than the official website. The blog came about as a space for fun stories, sales info, style tips, event recaps, recent press, and — best of all — a showcase for the creative, inspiring ideas our fans send us over Facebook,Twitter and email.

Do other regions blog?
They do indeed and they are great at it! There’s a whole must-read network of Goodwill blogs, so if you’re ever going on a road trip, be sure to google your destination + “Goodwill” + “blog” and jump right into a local community of style, savings, & giving back

Are the blog followers all Goodwill shoppers? Or have some become Goodwill shoppers after discovering the blog?
It’s funny you ask. We’re actually running a survey right now over on our blog to figure out exactly what the break-down is. What we’re finding so far is that our blog, Facebook & Twitter followers are overwhelmingly Goodwill shoppers and donators. They like the online efforts because it gives them a quick and easy way to keep aware of upcoming sales, share great finds with the community, and get inspired by fashion ideas and creative projects. We hope to convert style-lovers and deal-seekers over to the good work of Goodwill, too, though, so keep spreading the word!

What is the largest demographic of the blog’s following?
.
While it’s more difficult to tell you the blog’s break-down, we gather a lot of information from our Facebook insights. On Facebook, it seems we have a way with the ladies 😉 — nearly 70 percent of our Facebook fans are women, though the age range varies. We do offer posts specifically for men (like our A Good Look for Men column by GoodwillNyNj Style Icon David Morgan), though, and those 30 percent of fans of the male persuasion are some of our most vocal — one was even in the running for Esquire Magazine’s Best Dressed Real-Man Award!

Are people surprised to hear Goodwill & blog in the same sentence?
You know, people don’t seem to think it’s an outrageous idea at all. Our fans are delighted we’ve decided to make the most of the online space, certainly, especially considering we are an organization that has such a strong commitment to our local real-world community. Still, I think people see GoodwillNyNj as creative, crafty and accessible. We really genuinely love our shoppers and donators, so of course we’d want to show off their style and give them access to good sale info, fun event ideas, and new ways to look at secondhand finds. Sure, we’ve been serving the Greater New York and Northern New Jersey area since 1915, but we’re all about being responsive to change and embracing new ways to spread the Goodwill.

Why is social media helpful to Goodwill?
We can’t speak for all of Goodwill, but for our local Goodwill of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, social media allows us to be far more responsive to our shoppers and donators. It’s another avenue of customer service, and also an incredible rewarding way for us to get to know and celebrate our fans. GoodwillNyNj is about community — online, offline, in stores, and out — and we love being a part of it.

What is Goodwill’s mission?
A hand up, not a hand out. We focus on turning donations into job opportunities and worker rehabilitation programs to get people in our local community back into the economic mainstream.

How many stores are located in the Greater New York and Northern New Jersey area?

What little factoids do people not know about Goodwill?
Goodwill is consistently in Money Magazine’s “Best Run Charities” top 5.
