Puttin’ on the Ritz: Jazz Age Lawn Party

1 Sep

The Roaring 20s came on like a flood of booze at a Prohibition Speakeasy this past weekend on Governors Island.

Naturally the Great Gatsby event drew as many flappers as photographers, yet by great luck, yours truly was captured and featured on the style site FlavorWire.com, where they referenced me as ” a ’30s-style Annie Hall.” To see an amazing set of photos from the event, click here.

My dress is a '80s-does-the-'20s number that I picked up for $20 two days before I wore it! Pictured from left: 1920s tap sensation Kristen Minsky, stylist & event extraordinaire John "Dandy" Wellington-Simon, multi-talented composer Taylor Jones, swing dancing wonder David Lochner and yours truly on Sunday, August 30, 2010. Myself and the impeccable Mr. Voon Wai dancing on the Sunday evening ferry back to Manhattan as Drew Nugent & The Midnight Society gave us one last summer hurrah!

Another esteemed fashion blogger and photographer, Rachel Scroggins, snapped amazing photos and posted an entry on the event at her blog, TheGreyestGhost.wordpress.com. Read and view her perspective, click here.

Lastly, have you ever wondered what it would be like to dance your way across the harbor to Manhattan with the sizzling hot jazz of the 1920s … Well, then, here’s your chance! Welcome to my world … Enjoy the sweet sounds of Drew Nugent & The Midnight Society.

Robin, your outfits are amazing. I’m attending the Lawn Party this year for the first time…also my first time taking part of a period event! This will be the first of many to come as I pursue my interest to be part of eras that I wish I could have been part of. My old soul has been craving it for years…Anyways, I’m actually hoping you can help and lead me in the right direction for a 1920s inspired outfit. I went through my closet and can’t seem to find anything that I could put together. Do you have any recommendations of shops in the city I could check out?

    Thank you sooooo much!!!
    Susan
